Africa’s super-famous preacher Pastor Chris Oyakhilome raised a few eyebrows with recent statements about women and their role in the world. Nigerian Christian feminists are hopping mad and ready to ask for the sensational faith-healer’s head. While these feminists share Pastor Chris’ Christian faith, they believe that his claims about women are unfounded and totally misrepresent what the Bible says about females.
What Pastor Chris Said
Pastor Chris first started the stink with feminists when he explained a woman’s role in marriage. Rather than following the modern belief that women are equals in the relationship, Pastor Chris informed his readers that being a man does not make you partner in marriage – instead, you are the master of the marriage if you’re the husband. Not only did he set women straight about who was in charge, but he also claimed that most of the problems in Christian marriages arose from the false belief that women are equal partners with men. Pastor Chris told his audience that women were made to help men meet their responsibilities.
Pastor Chris’ Solution
Pastor Chris explained that his solution to the marriage problem is for women to accept that their husband is the head of the union and to grasp for a better understanding of their man. But when it comes to men trying to understand their wives…well, that’s where Pastor Chris puts down his fist and announces that women are wrong to expect men to try to understand them because the wife is under the man’s authority. Pastor Chris announced that men don’t get married because they want a woman will treat them like a second mother or an older sister – instead, men get married so they can have a woman who will please them. He said that the secret to a good marriage is in obedience, performing acts that please the husband, and listening to the husband. If a wife isn’t doing these things, she risks annoying her husband and making him angry.
His Biblical Basis
Pastor Chris points to the Bible as his source of inspiration, and references the verse that says man is the head of woman. The famous preacher went on to explain that marrying a man means coming under his authority and that, when a wife does not respect that authority, she is a rebel whose actions will not be accepted by God. Pastor Chris also takes a different twist on the story of creation, making it sound as if God was pleased with the world before He created woman and that He only made a woman as an after-thought.
The Outlook of Other Christian Pastors
While Pastor Chris’ comments are not totally distant from other Bible-preaching pastors, few step out with such blunt comments. Most main-stream Christian pastors encourage women to respect their husbands, but also remind the husband that the Bible distinctly commands a man to love his wife as Christ loves the church. Pastors also point out that God created Eve as a helper for Adam, because he needed someone so that he would not be alone – a position that puts women high above a simply after-thought.
Pastor Chris’ Own Marriage
Not too surprising, Pastor Chris has had a rocky marriage of his own. After twenty-five-years of marriage, his wife Anita left him and pursued a divorce. Could his unusual beliefs on marriage be a part of the problem? Judging by Pastor Chris’ statements about marriage problems being the fault of the wife, we can only guess that his wife receives much of his blame for the divorce.
